WE ARE CHANGING THE FUTURE

Safety For Every Girl is a women-led charity focused on eliminating Period Poverty. We are committed to breaking barriers, ending period stigma and ensuring girls in marginalized communities across Nigeria find their voices.

The Issue - Period Poverty

Period poverty stemming from financial limitations, results in limited access to menstrual hygiene products and education, negatively impacting health, daily life, education, and employment, particularly affecting those with limited financial means.

Due to the scarcity of menstrual supplies, girls in underserved areas use unsanitary materials, risking health issues like infections. This leads to problems like odors, discomfort, distractions, increased absenteeism, and high school dropout rates, particularly among marginalized communities. In Nigeria, where 62% of the 10.5 million out-of-school children are girls, disrupted education hinders their career prospects and labor market participation.

Our Mission - Our Response

In response to this challenge, we support girls by challenging the stigmas, taboos and inequalities associated with menstruation through service, education and advocacy. In addition to providing girls with sustainable period management products, we provide education on menstrual health and intend to be at the forefront of conversations against period poverty in Nigeria.

We believe that every girl deserves to live in a world where their education and future are not derailed due to their inability to afford menstrual products. We are committed to eradicating period poverty among young girls and women in Nigeria through the provision of access to menstrual health education, products and support. And with your support, we can make it happen.

The Issue - Period Poverty

Period Poverty refers to inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products, education, and sanitation facilities, primarily due to financial constraints (WorldBank, 2018). It leads to severe consequences on health, daily life, education, and work, stripping women of their dignity.

As a consequence of period poverty, girls in rural and low-economic urban areas are left without access to menstrual hygiene products, forcing them to resort to using unsanitary materials such as papers, rags, or leaves to manage their periods, posing significant health risks and contributing to reproductive and urinary tract infections. This improvisation leads to challenges like odours and leakages, causing discomfort, distraction, increased absenteeism, and high rates of school dropouts, particularly in marginalized communities.

In Nigeria, 62% of the 10.5 million out-of-school children are girls (UNICEF, 2022). When education is truncated, it prevents girls from building the human capital they need to pursue a professional career and reduces their participation in the labour market.
